How we pick

The crowd is usually right, if you know how to read it. Here is exactly how we do it, so you can judge our picks and check them yourself.

8.5+Hotel score out of 10
300+Reviews, more than most rivals
6 moWindow for recent complaints
4.5★Tour rating out of 5
1,000+Tour reviews

Hotels: the numbers

01

Score of 8.5 or higher

On a 10-point scale, across the major booking platforms. Below that, there's usually a reason.

02

More reviews than the competition

A high score only means something with volume behind it. We compare each hotel with others in the same area and category, and favour those with more reviews than most of them. As a floor, we want at least 300.

03

No repeated deal-breakers in the last six months

We read the newest negative reviews first. Old problems that were fixed don't count; new patterns do.

04

Value within its class

A budget pick won't be luxurious, but it has to be clean, safe and worth the money. A luxury pick has to justify its price.

05

Three picks, each with a reason

Usually a value pick, a sweet spot and a splurge, with a price range and what nobody tells you about each one.

Deal-breakers vs. quirks

Not every complaint matters equally. We separate them.

Rules a place out
  • Dirty rooms or bathrooms
  • Bad beds or no sleep
  • Safety concerns
  • Photos that don't match reality
  • Rude or absent staff
Becomes a tip instead
  • Weak breakfast: book room only
  • Shower but no bathtub
  • No bidet, pool or rooftop
  • Slow lift in an old building
  • Small but well-kept rooms

A great hotel can lose half a point because guests hate the breakfast. That doesn't make it a bad hotel. It means you should book it without breakfast, and we'll say so.

Hidden gems

Some places score between 8.0 and 8.4, have lots of reviews, and drop only because of a quirk. If everything that matters is excellent, they can make the list, marked as a Hidden gem with the reason explained.

Location

Location is how we organise shortlists, not a hard filter. Most picks are central, where travellers want to be: on Gran Vía, around Plaza Mayor, near the Pantheon. When the best option is outside the centre, it gets its own shortlist and we tell you the trade-off.

The social check

Listings show the best room on the best day. Guests posting on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and travel forums show the rest. Before a place makes our list, we look for recent guest photos and videos and compare them with the listing.

Tours & tickets

We only cover what you'll actually pay for: timed entries, guided visits, day trips and transfers. We want a rating of 4.5 out of 5 or higher with at least 1,000 reviews, favour official tickets and established operators, and say when a guided tour adds real value and when a plain ticket is enough.

Our badges

  • Hidden gem Great where it counts, held back by a quirk we explain.
  • We stayed here Used only when someone on our team actually stayed there.
  • Must-book Something you will pay for in that city, so book it ahead.

Independence

We receive commissions through affiliate links (see our disclosure). A commission can affect which booking site we link to. It never decides whether a hotel or tour makes the list.

Updates

Each page shows the month it was last checked, and prices carry that date too. When something gets worse, we replace it.
